Music
At Greens Norton, music is taught through a high-quality, engaging curriculum designed to inspire a love of music, nurture talent, and foster creativity. The school aims to increase self-confidence, passion and a sense of achievement in every student, encouraging curiosity and a life-long love for music. The lessons are designed to be fun, inspiring and to foster self-expression through music.
Using the Kapow scheme of work, the curriculum ensures progression across year groups, focusing on five key strands: listening, composing, performing, the history of music (KS2), and understanding the inter-related dimensions of music. Pupils learn both declarative (knowledge-based) and procedural (skills-based) concepts, including music theory, technical vocabulary and musical notation. This helps children understand different music styles, their origins and encourages them to respect and value all types of music. Pupils also explore the cultural and historical context of music, developing an appreciation for how music plays a role in people's lives and its significance in the wider community. Music is integrated into other subjects, offering children a comprehensive understanding of how music relates to culture, history, and the world around them.
In addition to regular music lessons, at Greens Norton, all children are actively encouraged and supported to learn to play a musical instrument. Each year, our Year 4 pupils learn an instrument together as part of our partnership with NMPAT’s First Access project — and for the last few years, they have learnt how to play different brass instruments! As well as this, Greens Norton offers opportunities for individual or small group instrumental lessons through NMPAT, where children currently learn how to plan string or brass instruments. Students also participate in performances, including singing assemblies, nativity productions, and seasonal celebrations, which further nurture their musical development.
