Modern Foreign Languages
French at Greens Norton Primary School
Our Modern Foreign Languages curriculum focuses on French and is designed to inspire curiosity, confidence, and enthusiasm in language learning.
French is taught throughout Key Stage 2 (Years 3 to 6) through regular, engaging lessons. We follow the Kapow Primary French scheme, which offers a clear, progressive structure and a wide range of interactive activities to develop skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Lessons are designed to build vocabulary, strengthen grammar awareness and encourage accurate pronunciation, while also nurturing a love of languages.
Real-Life Communication
To make language learning meaningful and memorable, pupils in Years 4 to 6 also take part in a pen pal exchange with a partner school in France. Writing to a real audience allows our children to put their language skills into practice — developing their ability to communicate clearly, while also gaining a deeper appreciation of life in a different country.
Through these exchanges, children not only grow in confidence with their French writing skills, but also build empathy, curiosity, and cultural understanding.
Aims of Our French Curriculum
By the end of Key Stage 2, we aim for all pupils to:
-
Develop a growing bank of vocabulary and phrases, organised around everyday topics.
-
Use French with increasing fluency and accuracy in both spoken and written forms.
-
Understand and respond to simple spoken and written French with confidence.
-
Appreciate the culture, customs and traditions of French-speaking countries.
-
Build the foundations for future language learning at secondary school and beyond.
At Greens Norton, we see language learning not just as a curriculum subject, but as a way to broaden horizons, spark new interests, and prepare our children to be confident communicators in an increasingly connected and multicultural world.
