English

It is our belief that knowledge and understanding about the English language is central to learning across all subjects. It is essential that children acquire these skills as soon as possible after they start school. Children are given many opportunities to use language skills in a variety of ways. These include:

Speaking and Listening:

Reading:

  • quiet reading times
  • shared and guided reading activities

Writing:

  • writing for a variety of purposes
  • usage of punctuation/grammar
  • writing for a variety of audiences
  • development of drafting/editing skills
  • use of literacy software

Spelling:

  • use of dictionaries and word banks
  • structured spelling programme

Handwriting:

  • Nelson handwriting scheme
  • attention to presentation
